The Dr. Brighten Podcast: How To Get Pregnant Faster: The Role of Toxins, Inflammation, and Men’s Health

The Dr. Brighten Podcast: How To Get Pregnant Faster: The Role of Toxins, Inflammation, and Men’s Health

In my conversation with Dr. Jolene Brighten, we explored a perspective on fertility that’s often overlooked in conventional care: preconception health as the true foundation of conception, pregnancy, and lifelong child health.

Fertility challenges are rarely random. I often describe infertility as a “check engine light” — not a failure, but a signal that the body needs deeper support before pregnancy.

One of the biggest themes we discussed was timing. Eggs and sperm take about three months to mature, meaning what you do in the months leading up to conception directly impacts fertility outcomes. While many couples simply stop birth control and start a prenatal, true preconception care addresses nutrient status, inflammation, toxin burden, mitochondrial health, and overall resilience.

We also explored the powerful role of environmental toxins — including plastics, pesticides, PFAS, and food packaging chemicals — which can disrupt hormones and damage reproductive function in both men and women. Even small reductions in exposure can make meaningful differences.

Detoxification was another key focus. Detox isn’t an extreme cleanse — it’s a daily biological process that requires nutrient support. Supporting detox pathways before pregnancy is especially important, since stored toxins can mobilize during gestation.

We also emphasized that fertility is not just a women’s issue. Male health contributes at least 50% of outcomes. Sperm quality — influenced by lifestyle, toxins, and epigenetics — impacts miscarriage risk and future child health.

Chronic inflammation, gut dysfunction, and microbiome imbalances were also discussed as upstream drivers that can affect ovulation, implantation, and pregnancy stability.

Even in the context of IVF, preparing the body beforehand can improve success rates, reduce miscarriage risk, and sometimes restore natural fertility.

If there’s one takeaway, it’s this:

Fertility isn’t just about getting pregnant — it’s about preparing the healthiest possible environment for the next generation.

Preconception health is preventive medicine at its most powerful.
